This list of ‘Top 5 Must See Broadway Musicals’ will ensure you don’t end up at a bad show
Seeing a musical on Broadway is a New York City experience that everyone should have in their lifetime. From the talented performers to the amazing sets, you’ll find it difficult not to be blown away by whatever show you chose to see. However, there are some Broadway shows that are just a little more amazing than the rest. Take a read of our Top 5 ‘Must See Broadway Musicals‘…
The first show on our must see Broadway musicals list is one that has attracted the likes of Tom Hanks, Beyonce and even the Obamas to its audience since it opened in August last year. ‘Hamilton’ is a hip hop musical based on the life of one of the founding fathers of the United States, Alexander Hamilton. It’s hard to imagine how hip hop and history could ever be a good combination, but this musical makes it work. From the incredible choreography to the top-notch rapping skills of its leading man, it’s no wonder this show has received such rave reviews. ‘Hamilton’ is currently one of the hottest tickets in town so, if you want to get your hands on one, booking this Broadway show well in advance of your trip is definitely recommended.
An American in Paris
Prepare to be transported back to 1940’s Paris in the gorgeous show, ‘An American in Paris’. Based on the Academy Award winning film of the same name, the musical is about an American soldier who opts to stay in Paris after the end of WWII and falls madly in love with a beautiful ballerina. Like Hamilton, ‘An American in Paris’, is one of Broadway’s newer additions and has been widely lauded by critics and Broadway fans alike. This show is one that will leave you humming its songs long after you’ve left the theater and is an ideal way to end a romantic New York getaway.
School of Rock
If you’re heading to the Big Apple with kids in tow there are lots of must see Broadway musicals that younger fans will love, however, ‘School of Rock’ is a show that parents will love too. Featuring music by the world famous composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and a book by Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes, ‘School of Rock’, more than lives up the hype that’s surrounded it since Webber revealed he had purchased the rights in 2013. The cast of the show is one of the youngest on Broadway, yet they have no problem singing and dancing up a storm for over two hours. With feel-good, upbeat music and an enthusiastic cast, it’s a task not to exit this show without a massive smile on your face.
Fun Home is a musical about the lies and secrets families keep and although it might not have the same happy-go-lucky tone of the other shows on this list of must see Broadway musicals, it is easily one of the most touching. The dialogue, lyrics and general subject matter will resonate with anyone who’s ever had family issues, so much so that a box of Kleenex is definitely recommended. Don’t worry though, mixed in with these more serious themes are moments of spectacular humor that will have you doubled over in your seat. If all of this wasn’t enough to convince you to go and see it, Fun Home also picked up five Tony Awards including ‘Best Musical’—what better recommendation could you get?
When most people think of Disney on Broadway they immediately imagine the extremely popular stage show, ‘The Lion King.’ Although ‘The Lion King’ is undoubtedly a wonderful musical, Disney’s newest show, ‘Aladdin’, is just a touch more exciting in our opinion. Featuring an incredible flying carpet and some of the most vibrant costumes on Broadway, ‘Aladdin’ is an absolute feast for the eyes. Both the dancing and the music are wonderful and will have you aching to get up out of your seat and join in with talented cast. This is the kind of show that any child will adore and a great way to add a little bit more magic to your New York City trip.
